Indiewire names The Way a 2011 Box Office “Winner”
January 12th, 2012
The Way is getting continued recognition for its strong 2011 box office results, a fact that was reconfirmed last week by the specialty film experts at Indiewire. To quote:
Grassroots campaigns proved hugely successful for [one of] the most surprising indie hits of the year – Emilio Estevez’s “The Way”. ”The Way” made its way to theaters on October 7th via a partnership between Estevez, Elixir Films, Producers Distribution Agency and ARC Entertainment.
Similar to its approach with “Exit Through The Gift Shop” and “Senna,” PDA assembled a team who included Richard Abramowitz, Mark Schiller, Dennis Rice and Cynthia Swartz.
“We set out to prove what a traditional distributor would do,” Sloss said in a story that ran on Indiewire last month. “Or maybe even a little better.”
It worked. After 12 weeks of release, it has grossed $4.2 million. In a true testament to its word of mouth, it saw its per-theater-average rise four consecutive weekends — particularly rare given that it was the film’s 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th weekends, respectively.

Hollywood’s Variety praises The Way for strong word of mouth
December 7th, 2011
An article from the December 1st issue of Hollywood film industry newspaper Variety is singing the praises of The Way’s continued box office success. Thanks largely to a grass-roots marketing campaign and strong fan participation on the film’s Facebook page, Variety reports The Way is still going strong, rising to over $3 million in box office gross despite the lack of a traditional Hollywood-style marketing campaign. A special thank you to the film’s wonderful fans who have told their friends, family and loved ones about The Way – the film’s success wouldn’t have been possible without you!

Smithsonian Magazine calls The Way a “cinematic trek worth taking”
November 17th, 2011
The Smithsonian Magazine’s “Constant Traveler” blog posted a wonderful write-up on The Way this week. Smithsonian’s Susan Spano had this to say about the film:
“For people who have dreamed about walking the Camino, the film is the next best thing, not only because of its glorious Pyrenees and Spanish Basque country setting, but because it dramatizes the emotional and spiritual journey pilgrims inevitably take, regardless of religious affiliation.”
